DESCRIPTION:Intensive agriculture as conventionally practiced is character
 ized by high yields and substantial environmental harm.  The emergence of 
 potential markets for ecosystem services offers a way to incentivize outpu
 ts other than yield but requires an integrated approach and an ecological 
 understanding that considers various trade-offs. Research in the US Midwes
 t shows how farmers might provide ecosystem services such as climate chang
 e mitigation.
