DESCRIPTION:Priti Parikh is a chartered civil engineer with eight years of
  work experience. She has worked on structural engineering\, civil enginee
 ring and planning projects in both India and the UK\, and won the ACE's Ou
 tstanding\nContribution Award for her work in slums and earthquake relief 
 in 2004. Priti is currently a PhD student in Cambridge at the Centre for S
 ustainable Development looking at the impacts of water and sanitation in t
 he low income settlements of India and South Africa.\n\nThis talk will dis
 cuss research and demonstrate the impacts of household water and sanitatio
 n on health\, education\, incomes and housing. An outcome of this research
  is that communities are willing to pay and can\ngenerate their own resour
 ces to meet the development needs. The talk will also look at the long ter
 m community investments generated because of water and sanitation and will
  touch on the concept of 'multiplier effect'.
