DESCRIPTION:Recent advances in biomedical research\, including Bioinformat
 ics\, Computational Biology\, and\nMedical imaging\, are generating a huge
amount of data to be analyzed. Processing this ensemble of\ndata within a
reasonable time is a difficult task that can be addressed relying on High
 -Performance\nComputing (HPC) infrastructures\, such as multi-core Central
Processing Units (CPUs) and\nGraphics Processing Units (GPUs). On the con
trary\, other fields of research (e.g.\, Systems Biology)\nrequire computa
tional methods that deal with issues related to the lack of quantitative d
ata\,\nespecially in the case of large-scale instances. Computational Inte
lligence methods can be\neffectively applied to tackle the complexity of s
ome well-know problems in these fields\, such as the\nParameter Estimation
(PE) problem in Systems Biology and the Haplotype Assembly (HA)\nproblem
in Genome Analysis.\nIn this talk\, the challenges\, the peculiarities and
the novel trends in HPC will be described and\nanalyzed. I will start int
roducing the HPC architectures\, focusing especially on multi-core CPUs\na
nd GPUs. Afterwards\, the PE and the HA problems will be briefly described
. To conclude\, some\nrecent accelerated methods designed to deal with tho
se problems will be presented and discussed.\n\n\nAndrea Tangherloni recei
ved his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Computer Science from the\n
University of Milano-Bicocca\, Italy\, in 2013 and 2015\, respectively. He
is currently a Ph.D. Student\nin Computer Science\, under the supervision
  of Prof. D. Besozzi and Dr. P. Cazzaniga\, at the\nUniversity of Milano-B
icocca\, Italy.\nHis main scientific research interests include High-Perfo
 rmance Computing\, Systems Biology\,\nComputational Biology\, Bioinformati
 cs\, Genome Analysis\, Computational Intelligence\, and\nBiomedical Image
