DESCRIPTION:In this talk we shall discuss our recent result which establis
hes that the Schwarzschild family of black holes are linearly stable as so
lutions to the Einstein vacuum equations when expressed in a generalised w
ave gauge: all sufficiently regular solutions to the system of equations t
hat result from linearising the Einstein vacuum equations\, as expressed i
n a generalised wave gauge\, about a fixed Schwarzschild solution decay at
an inverse polynomial rate to the sum of a residual pure gauge and linear
ised Kerr solution. The result thus complements the recent seminal paper o
f Dafermos—Holzegel—Rodnianski in a similar vein as to how the work of
Lindblad—Rodnianski complemented that of Christodoulou—Klainerman in
establishing the nonlinear stability of the Minkowski space.
