DESCRIPTION:Across Europe large numbers of women take medicines during pre
 gnancy. How safe are these medicines? This seminar will examine how much e
 vidence there is on the safety of medicines in pregnancy\, how this eviden
 ce has been obtained and what new methods are being applied to obtain more
  evidence. Briefly case studies of what happens when a drug is identified 
 as being potentially harmful will be presented.\n\nBiography \n\nI am Prof
 essor of Medical Statistics and Director of the National Down Syndrome Cyt
 ogenetic Register (NDSCR).  I am responsible for providing national survei
 llance of congenital anomalies for England and Wales. \nI work with EUROCA
 T (European Congenital Anomaly Registers) to develop methods of surveillan
 ce of congenital anomalies and with EUROMedicat to develop a European repr
 oductive pharmacovigilance system.\nMy work with Professor Sir Nicholas Wa
 ld is in evaluating the effectiveness of screening strategies for many dif
 ferent disorders\, for example heart disease (including the meta-analytic 
 work on the "polypill" )\, familial hypercholesterolaemia\, cystic fibrosi
 s\, fragile X syndrome\, neural tube defects and Down syndrome.\nRecent wo
 rk includes mathematically modeling the population effect of cascade testi
 ng for a range of disorders.\n\n
