DESCRIPTION:This paper traces some major manifestations of directive speec
 h acts in\nthe history of English. It considers their evolution\, their sp
 read\, and\ntheir distribution across genres and the considerations which 
 may have\naffected their formulation (e.g. politeness). It falls into thre
 e parts.\nFirst I will shortly talk about directive speech acts and polite
 ness and\nraise some methodological issues. Then I will present several ca
 se\nstudies illustrating the development of directives in the history of\n
 English. In the third part I will draw some general conclusions which\nreg
 ard the development and range of directives in the history of English
