DESCRIPTION:Ion traps are currently one of the most well-developed and pr
omising technologies for implementing quantum information processing\, tho
ugh the challenges remain enormous. I will introduce the general ideas of
ion trap QIP\, and report on recent results at Oxford. These include two-q
 ubit entangling gates\, a memory qubit with long-lived coherence (T2 ~ one
minute)\, qubit readout with high fidelity (99.985%)\, and progress towar
ds scaling the system up using microfabricated trap arrays.
