DESCRIPTION:The rapid rise and sprawl of mobile phones\, social media\, an
d other digital technologies in the early twenty-first century has ensured
that human communication now involves ever-more complex mixtures of image
 s\, words (both written\nand spoken)\, visual formats\, sounds\, music\, g
estures\, and the like. An animated emoji in a text message\, an internet
meme shared on Facebook\, an interactive online banner advert – these ar
e all familiar multimodal exchanges. But how\nexactly do we convey and ext
ract meaning in these contexts? And\, crucially\, how do we transfer those
intricate meanings from one language to another?\n\nThis conference will
provide an opportunity to consider how translation needs to be redefined a
nd reconfigured in environments where communication involves multiple mode
 s. The speakers are prominent experts in translation theory\nand/or multim
odality. Although many innovative theoretical approaches will be presented
\, these will always arise from detailed analyses of specific examples of
 multimodal meaning-transfer. Therefore\, a large number of specific\ncase-
studies will be considered\, ranging from pop music\, to paralinguistic ge
sture\, to Italian and English literature\, to modern ballet\, to digital
media.\n\nYou can find the final programme\, abstracts\, and details on ho
