DESCRIPTION:Two-day conference organised by the 'Making Visible' project a
 t CRASSH. \n\n16 July 2018\, 09:00 - 17:30\n17 July 2018\, 09:00 - 12:45\n
\nThe aim of this workshop is to explore the connections and networks with
in the wider visual worlds of the members of the early Royal Society (c. 1
660-c.1710). Royal Society Fellows such as John Evelyn\, Samuel Pepys\, Th
omas Povey\, and William Aglionby were enthusiastic collectors of art\, in
cluding prints\, and were familiar with Continental collections and art th
eoretical works. They interacted frequently with printers\, instrument mak
ers and craftsmen\, attended auctions\, and made a point of donating portr
aits to the Society. How did
 first-hand experience and appreciation of
art\, artistic skills and collections affect the way members of the Socie
ty approached and judged images and objects of knowledge? How did their en
gagement with the visual worlds around them compare with their Continental
counter-parts? We hope to bring together historians of science\, art\, co
llections\, and print culture in order to bridge the artificial and unhelp
ful differentiation of ‘artist’ and ‘scientific’ images in this pe
 riod.\n\nSpeakers: Alexander Marr\, Matthew Walker\, Rebekah Higgitt\, Hen
 rietta McBurney Ryan\, Sietske Fransen\, Kate Bennett\, Karin Leonhard & E
 lisa von Minnigerode\, Spike Bucklow\, Andrew Burnett\, Frances Hughes\, K
atherine M. Reinhart\, Katy Barrett\n\nA small number of travel bursaries
for graduate students and early career fellows from the UK and overseas ar
e available. Please contact Judith Weik (jw571@cam.ac.uk) to apply\, stat
ing your affiliation and providing a brief statement as to why you would l
 ike to attend the conference.
