SUMMARY:Triggering light emission by mechanical stimulation: behaviour of
a dinoflagellate - Antoine Dode (École Polytechnique)

DESCRIPTION:Bioluminescence in nature is a long-reported phenomenon which
can create an impressive illumination of the sea. Dinoflagellates are plan
kton and some of them exhibit bioluminescence when disturbed. In this talk
we will focus on the Pyrocystis lunula\, a croissant-shaped dinoflagellat
 e. We will discuss its response to mechanical stimulation applied by a flo
w in terms of light emission. The behaviour of this alga has been investig
 ated combining computations and experiments.\n
