DESCRIPTION:The IET's Electromagnetics Technical and Professional Network
will provide an introduction to electromagnetics. Electromagnetics covers
a wide spectrum of practical applications from electrical power generatio
n to wireless communications. Our understanding of this phenomena is the
result of work by many famous scientists including Faraday\, Franklin and
Heaviside. This talk will introduce the basic concepts and contributions
from these great names and also how Maxwell developed his famous equations
.\n\nFrom these foundations and the advent of computers\, numerical simula
tion tools allow us to visualize electromagnetic fields. With this insigh
t\, engineers and scientists today can investigate and optimize their desi
gns. A review of some of these practical applications will also be presen
ted in this presentation.\n\nThe talk will be given by Dr Richard Chippend
ale who is a Technical Manager at COMSOL UK specializing in electromagneti
c simulations. He graduated from the University of Southampton in 2009 wi
th a Master’s degree in Physics (Mphys)\, and continued at the same inst
itution to complete a PhD investigating the interaction of lightning strik
es with carbon fibre composites using numerical simulations. He then spen
t 4 years as a research fellow at the University of Southampton focusing o
n high voltage cable simulations for both the onshore and offshore sector.
