DESCRIPTION:This illustrated slide lecture looks at the ways in which scul
pture shaped and responded to the extreme political shifts in early twenti
eth-century Germany. The era was marked by contradictions: from abstract w
ar memorials to fascist monuments\, from the representation of broken male
bodies to the celebration of athletic nudes\, from Expressionism to Class
icism. Sculpture is particularly sensitive to regime changes because of it
s public and monumental character. You will gain insights into the fascina
ting and fantastic sculpture made in Germany during the Weimar years 1919-
1932 and the equally fascinating dark history of Nazi sculpture 1933-1945.
