DESCRIPTION:I will outline a new framework based on tropical geometry to s
tudy genus one\ncurve singularities and discuss its relationship with the
geometry of moduli\nspaces. I will focus on the application of this framew
ork to construct new\nnonsingular compact moduli spaces parameterizing ell
iptic curves in projective\nspace. This also reveals a modular interpretat
ion for Vakil and Zinger’s\nfamously difficult desingularization of the
space of elliptic curves in\nprojective space\, as well as a short and con
ceptual proof of that result. The\nframework also gives rise to new insigh
ts into the Hassett—Keel program for\nspaces of elliptic curves. This is
based on joint work with Keli Santos-Parker\nand Jonathan Wise.
