DESCRIPTION:The problem of counting lattice elements in locally compact\ng
roups is a natural generalization of such classical results\nas the asympt
otics for the number of lattice points in the Euclidean\nor hyperbolic pla
ne. We will describe a general approach to\nsuch counting problems based o
n ergodic theory\, which has the\nadvantage of providing good error estima
tes uniformly over\nfamilies of subgroups satisfying property (tau). Based
  on joint work\nwith Amos Nevo.\n
