DESCRIPTION:After giving a pedagogical introduction to the phenomenon of s
 hear banding\nin complex fluids\, I will discuss research aimed at modelli
 ng (i) the\nkinetics of shear band formation upon shear startup\, and (ii)
  erratic\ndynamics of shear bands once they have fully formed. Time permit
 ting I\nwill also discuss (iii) recent work on shear banding in biological
 ly\nactive suspensions.\n
