DESCRIPTION:A result of Hesselholt and Madsen asserts that the ring of com
 ponents of the topological restriction homology (TR) is isomorphic to the 
 ring of Witt vectors. Trying to prove a real analog of this result leads t
 o a surprising algebraic fact: Witt vectors have an extra functoriality wi
 th respect to certain polynomial maps. In this talk we will discuss the ex
 tra functoriality and its applications to some problems in algebra and top
 ology. This is joint work with E. Dotto and K. Moi.
