SUMMARY:The causes and consequences of the Messinian Salinity Crisis - Pro
fessor Rachel Flecker - University of Bristol

DESCRIPTION:Five to six million years ago ~1.5km of salt precipitated on t
he Mediterranean sea floor in an event\nknown as the Messinian Salinity Cr
isis. This youngest and largest of Earth’s salt giants represents the\np
recipitation and sequestration of about 5% of global ocean salt. \n\nUntan
gling the roles played by\nclimate and tectonics in causing the Messinian
Salinity Crisis has been the focus of many studies over\nthe last three de
cades since the Deep Sea Drilling Program first recovered Late Miocene eva
porites\nfrom the Mediterranean. The global consequences of this extreme e
vent however\, have remained\nunclear. In this talk I’ll consider whethe
r\, despite its impressive scale\, the Messinian Salinity Crisis is\nan un
important side show in Earth history\, or whether we’ve just been asking
  the wrong question.
