DESCRIPTION:Analytic solutions for most PDEs are known only for some simpl
e\ndomains\, such as a circle\, square\, or sphere. In order to obtain sol
utions\nfor more realistic domains\, numerical approximations such as the\
nfinite element method (FEM) and finite volume methods (FVM) are used.\nMe
sh generation is a key step prior to these numerical\nmethods. It is itse
lf an active research topic with\nbackground in mathematics\, computer sci
ence\, and engineering. Apart\nfrom numerical solution of PDEs\, its appli
cations are numerous and have \npractical uses in fields such as archaeolo
gy\, cinematography and robotics.\n\nIn this talk\, we will begin with tri
angle mesh generation and adaptation in \nthe plane. This problem has been
well studied. Efficient algorithms are \ndeveloped. We will then move to
tetrahedral mesh generation in 3d\, which is \nstill challenged by many t
heoretical and practical issues. In this talk\, we \nwill highlight some r
 ecent development in this field.\n
