DESCRIPTION:A range of scales applies to most energy technologies\, from t
 he fundamental science underpinning them to the industrial-scale.  Often t
 hese scales are considered in isolation.  A new multi-scale approach is pr
 esented\, which considers energy technologies holistically.  It is applied
  to chemical looping combustion\, a promising technology for carbon captur
 e and storage.  The approach gives valuable new insight into how chemical 
 looping combustion could be optimised for industrial use.
