DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nAs interest continues in lightweight units of exec
ution for the cloud\,\nLinux containers continue to be plagued by a percei
ved lack of\nisolation. At the same time\, unikernels have offered an alt
ernative\nto containers that is not only lightweight\, but also inherits t
he\nisolation properties (and also some downsides of) VMs. In this talk I
\nwill argue that virtualization is not necessary for unikernels to\nmaint
ain a similar level of isolation to VMs. I will also describe\nongoing ef
forts toward a new container runtime called Nabla\, based on\nrunning unik
ernels as processes\, discuss some of the challenges in\nbridging the gap
between containers and unikernels\, and highlight\nfuture research directi
ons.\n \nBio:\nDan Williams is a Research Staff Member at the IBM T.J. Wat
son\nResearch Lab in Yorktown Heights\, NY\, where he works in the cloud\n
research organization on unikernels and containers. His current\nresearch
led to the Solo5 project (used by MirageOS) and Nabla\ncontainers. His re
search interests span low-level operating systems\nand security.
