DESCRIPTION:In holography\, the Ryu-Takayanagi conjecture relates the entr
opy associated to a region on the boundary with the area of a certain mini
mal surface in the bulk. I will describe the standard arguments for the va
lidity of this conjecture\, and argue that these arguments suffer from a c
ommon weakness – their use of the so-called 'replica trick'. I will then
present a new approach to proving the conjecture which does not rely upon
  the replica trick.
