DESCRIPTION:The integration of optical components at the chip level demand
 s for novel device concepts and material systems. In this talk we present 
 our work towards two important functions: lasing and switching. We report 
 on a surface-emitting mixed-order photonic crystal laser with an organic g
 ain material. This photonic structure enhances the optical confinement and
  the mode coupling and enables lasing thresholds as low as 40 pJ optical p
 ump energy with 15um x 15um active device area. Hybrid organic/inorganic m
 aterials are expected to exhibit large optical nonlinearities which could 
 become essential in realizing fast all-optical switches. We study the unde
 rlying fundamental electronic energy transfer processes in an amorphous po
 lyfluorene donor CdSe/ZnS core-shell nanocrystal acceptor system. \n
