DESCRIPTION:The dark energy crisis\, combined with ideas such as the lands
cape\, no longer makes the critical assumption of homogeneity in cosmology
assured. It is consequently imperative that we now try to prove beyond a
reasonable doubt the Copernican Principle\, rather than relying on a prepo
nderance of evidence for it as we have until now.\nWe present an observati
onal test for the Copernican assumption which can be automatically impleme
nted while we search for dark energy in the coming decade. This test is e
ntirely independent of any model for dark energy or theory of gravity and
thereby represents a model-independent test of the Copernican Principle.
