DESCRIPTION:LAMMPS is a popular software package for simulation of particl
e-based methods at atomic\, meso or continuum scale. This project\, in col
laboration with Dr Krishna Kumar (Civil Engineering)\, aims to build on th
e current LAMMPS GRANULAR package for discrete element method simulation t
owards simulation of landslides at realistic scale. This will require simu
lations with orders of magnitude more particles than currently possible an
d so requires maximum performance by adopting novel hardware including man
y-core and GPGPU. The framework in LAMMPS that is used to achieve this is
KOKKOS\, a C++ library that allows methods to be implemented with portable
and cost-free abstractions. I will in introduce LAMMPS and give an overvi
ew of the KOKKOS library before talking about the development required to
implement the granular package using KOKKOS and the science cases enabled
 by this.
