DESCRIPTION:Gaia is a cornerstone mission of the European Space Agency tha
t launched at the end of 2014. The goal of the mission is to map our Galax
y performing a census of more than 1 billion objects in the Milky Way. The
project involves more than 400 scientists and software engineers around E
urope.\nThe IoA in Cambridge hosts one of the 5 data centres processing th
e Gaia telemetry to produce science-grade data products which are made pub
licly available to the scientific community through data releases.\nThis p
resentation provides an overview of some of the data processing challenges
posed by Gaia and how they were successfully tamed using distributed syst
 ems like Hadoop and Spark.
