DESCRIPTION:The question of how many quasi-realistic string theory vacua e
xist has been the subject of recent controversy. Claims for the number of
de Sitter vacua range between 0 and 10^500. More generally\, it is importa
nt to know whether there are universal properties of consistent string the
ory solutions - for example\, are transPlanckian inflationary field excurs
ions consistent within a theory of quantum gravity? In this talk I review
the constructions of quasi-realistic string models and the so-called swamp
land conjectures on how their properties are constrained by quantum gravit
 y. I also describe work in progress on CFT_3 duals of AdS_4 moduli stabili
sation scenarios. In the context of the Large Volume Scenario this leads t
o sharp statements about the conformal dimensions of low-lying single trac
e operators and the form of their higher-point interactions.
