DESCRIPTION:The Gaia satellite mission and its follow-up surveys are revol
utionizing our\npicture of the Milky Way and Galactic dynamics in more way
s than we\nimagined. However\, since we are not used to dealing with very
large\ndatasets\, they are also very dangerous to the field\, since system
atic errors\nare easily mistaken as physical features. I will spend the fi
rst part of my\ntalk showing how we can get on top of the systematic error
s in the survey\nand line-out how the data set can be reasonably used. In
the second half I\nwill try to depict what we have learned about the warp
of the Galactic disc.\nOver the past couple of years the paradigm has evol
ved from the simple warp\nformerly observed in the Galactic gas and stars\
, to an intriguing wave\npattern that appears to connect wrinkles in the s
olar neighbourhood to giant\nwave-crests of several kpc height in the far
outer disc that can explain\nobservations like the Monoceros stream.
