DESCRIPTION:In this paper\, a brief survey is given on a number of researc
h activities devoted to exploring the relationship between superconductivi
ty\nand magnetism in f-electron systems. The starting point for these acti
vities has been the pioneering work of 1958 by Matthias and\ncoworkers ill
ustrating the antagonistic nature of the two phenomena. Subsequent efforts
concerned the investigation of Kondo superconductors\nand Kondo-lattice s
ystems (in the 1970s)\, heavy-fermion metals (in the 1980s and 90s) and qu
antum critical materials (in\nthe last decade). The latter systems are esp
ecially interesting as they promise a deeper insight into the mutual inter
play between unconventional\nsuperconductivity and magnetism.\n\nThe paper
