DESCRIPTION:*Throughout history societies have questioned humanity's place
in the universe and the origins of our existence. Today the scientific an
d mathematical pursuit of this knowledge forms the field of cosmology.* We
know an incredible amount about the universe’s structure and how it evo
lved to be as we now observe it. But how have we obtained this knowledge?
For instance\, how does mathematics help us to measure things in an enviro
nment as vast as the universe? What are the current questions occupying th
e minds of mathematicians and physicists in the field? *From the big bang
to the fate of the universe in the distant future\, this lecture explains
what we know about the universe\, how we know it\, and what there is left
to discover.*\n\n*About the speaker:* Born in Belfast\, David received his
first degree in theoretical physics from the University of Cambridge\, be
fore heading down the M11 to study for his doctorate at Queen Mary\, Unive
rsity of London. He has recently returned to Cambridge and is currently a
postdoctoral researcher in the newly established Centre for Theoretical Co
 smology.\n\n*Audience:* Secondary\; open to the general public\, ages 14+\
