DESCRIPTION:The talk will explore the origins of In Place Of War as an AHR
 C funded research project and examine its evolution as a charity/independe
 nt organisation which supports the work of artist communities in sites of 
 conflict and protracted conflict across three pillars: the development of 
 cultural spaces\, education and enterprise and artist collaboration\, unde
 rpinned by research. In charting this development\, Ruth and Teresa will p
 rovide an overview of IPOW core work in Africa\, Latin America and the Mid
 dle East\, outlining how projects are developed in collaboration with prac
 titioners in the IPOW network. The talk will also offer insights into appr
 oaches and considerations to collaborating with communities in the field\,
  how research projects are conceived and methodologies adopted. The talk w
 ill conclude by drawing on current research and core field activities that
  focus on addressing urgent issues as identified in the grassroots communi
 ties in the IPOW network.  \n\n*Teresa Ó Brádaigh Bean* is the Director 
 of Research and Education at In Place of War and an Honorary Research Fell
 ow at the University of Manchester. As a former teacher\, she wrote the aw
 arding winning CASE (Creative and Social Entrepreneur  Programme)an entry 
 level program designed to develop skills\, networks and knowledge of the c
 reative and social enterprise\, for artists\, creative practitioners and c
 ommunity leaders in sites of conflict and protracted crisis.\nIn addition 
 to this\, Teresa leads on research activities at In Place of War.  Buildin
 g on her postgraduate studies and field work with IPOW\, her research inte
 rests include\, art based social movements\, in particular hip hop in Colo
 mbia\, the role of community arts based education in sites of conflict and
  grassroots arts based peacebuilding.  She is currently working on a colla
 borative AHRC funded research project between IPOW\, University of Manches
 ter and Durham entitled ‘The Art of Peace: Interrogating community devis
 ed arts based peace-building’.\n\nCEO of In Place of War\, *Ruth Daniel*
  has led a diverse range of arts and peace-building initiatives across the
  globe. She has developed and implemented over a hundred cultural programm
 es in sites of conflict and disadvantage such as war zones\, post war zone
 s and areas of economic deprivation. She prepared numerous successful fund
 ing applications\, recently receiving £1million AHRC research grant for a
  3 year programme that will explore how grassroots organisations can creat
 e social change using art.
