DESCRIPTION:X-ray diffraction is one of the most powerful methods availabl
e for probing the structures of materials. Recent developments have made i
t possible to modify the temperature or pressure over the course of an exp
eriment\, allowing the response to these changes to be monitored to atomic
resolution. I have used this technique to investigate the unusual and ind
ustrially useful phenomenon of negative thermal expansion (i.e.\,\na decre
ase in volume upon heating) in a family of cyanide-bridged frameworks. The
se include a newly discovered polymorph of cadmium cyanide which displays
the largest isotropic negative thermal expansion currently known.
