DESCRIPTION:In this presentation we examine what it might mean to be creat
ive in the languages classroom. We report on an empirical project with sch
ool-age language students in the UK\, investigating the effects of text ty
pe and teaching approach on learning outcomes and on attitudes. For many y
ears younger learners in the UK have been exposed to mainly transactional
language in which the figurative has been stripped away. We were intereste
d in seeing how learners reacted to different types of text\, including po
etry\, and the outcomes when the learners were exposed to different teachi
ng approaches\, some of which aimed explicitly to prompt creative response
 s. We present some of our findings\, including those which suggest that th
e rate of vocabulary development can be improved through creative approach
es\, while attitudes towards language teaching\, whether within a traditio
nal or creative condition\, remain mixed.
