DESCRIPTION:In the real world we typically have very few observations from
a spatially and \ntemporally extended system. This is true in the study o
f climate\, ecology and \nplasma physics. Here we investigate how having l
imited measurements from a \nsimple flocking system effects the measured b
ehaviour of that system. We show \nthat mutual information provides a robu
st measurement of the behaviour of the \nsystem even when we only track ve
ry few of the particles in the flock. We \nthen show an example using mutu
al information and cross correlation to \nmeasure correlation in the turbu
lent plasma of the solar wind. We find that \nthe correlation length in th
e solar wind changes with the solar cycle. This \nis relevant to the study
of modulation of cosmic ray flux and magnetospheric \nsubstorm size and f
 requency.
