DESCRIPTION:Understanding ecosystems and their evolution through the clima
te of the Pleistocene ice ages requires detailed palaeo-climate reconstruc
tions. \nGlobal climate models (GCM) are frequently used to explore the ma
ny diverse aspect of past climates. However\, due to their high computatio
nal demand a continuous and spatially detailed exploration of the past rem
ains elusive. In this talk\, I will present a GCM emulator\, which is base
d on climate snapshot simulations of the last 120ka\, that allows us to re
construct the climate of the last 800\,000 years (and\nbeyond) in a quasi-
continuous way. I will show how the predictive skill of the GCM emulator c
an be tested against existing Pleistocene climate proxies and I will prese
nt a few highlights of how such an emulator can be used for ecological mod
elling\, for example\, the dispersal of anatomically modern humans out of
 Africa.
