DESCRIPTION:Optically emitting defect centres in diamond display a range o
f unique\nquantum properties that offer exciting possibilities for the\nco
nstruction of quantum devices which employ optical single-spin\nread-out.
Indeed diamond is an ideal material for use in the fabrication\nof (i) sin
gle photon sources for quantum communications\, (ii) optical\nfibre-based
single spin read out systems\, (iii) photonic platforms for\nthe investiga
tion of quantum entanglement in solid state systems and\n(iv) optical rege
nerators and non-linear quantum gates. The toolkit of\navailable fabricati
on strategies which are used to engineer devices\ntaking advantage of thes
e unique properties will be presented. As an\nexample of the realization o
f diamond for QIP\, we report on the\nmanufacture of the first commerciall
y available single photon source\nbased on diamond. \n\nThese crucial demo
nstrations establish the feasibility of a defect\ntolerant architecture fo
 r the fabrication of a few (~10-50 ) qubit\ndiamond based quantum informat
ion processor. We will present one such\npossible architecture and explain
the specific role for ion beam\nprocessing in the creation of qubits and
 the engineering of diamond\nphotonic devices.\n
