DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Black holes are described mathematically as solution
s of Einstein's equations of general relativity. Among the many strange pr
operties of black holes\, I will explore the phenomenon of a "black hole b
omb"\, an instability which can arise when a black hole is perturbed by a
scalar field. The ultimate fate of the black hole bomb is an open question
\, and I will discuss why this might be important\, not only theoretically
\, but also for black holes in the universe.
