DESCRIPTION:Abstract: General Relativity is a very elegant theory that cha
nged the way we think about gravitation and appears to be in perfect agree
ment with observations. For a period of almost 200 years\, one could make
the exact same statement about Newton's theory of gravity\, and yet it cam
e to be replaced by General Relativity. I will review how that happened an
d explain why one expects that General Relativity will have the same fate.
I will then discuss current efforts to test General Relativity's predicti
ons against observations.\n\n--\n\nAs always we welcome you all to join us
for dinner afterwards! It's a great opportunity to discuss the talk with
other audience members\, as well as a chance to talk to Prof. Sotiriou. Th
is week we'll be at "The Punter". If you would like to come and join us af
ter talk dining please sign up using this "Google form":https://goo.gl/for
ms/Y0UOb3S2VxjDyTMs2.\n\nEntry to the talk is free for members and £2 for
non-members. You can sign up for membership on the door\, with life membe
rship only £10! Snacks and refreshments will be available.\n\n\n
