DESCRIPTION:Very recent scientific and technological breakthroughs now all
ow researchers to study fundamental aspects of human cell biology with hit
herto unimaginable depth\, breadth and precision. Using paradigms derived
from my academic laboratory – one of which has led to the drug olaparib/
LynparzaTM that is being used to treat cancer patients worldwide – I wi
ll highlight how “blue skies” research into cell function can provide
insights into disease mechanisms and identify new opportunities for allevi
ating cancer. I will also explain how the approaches that my laboratory us
es may have utility in the context of human diseases associated with prote
 in misfolding and/or aggregation.
