DESCRIPTION:Diabetes mellitus is a common endocrine disease in cats. Felin
e diabetes mellitus shares many characteristics with human type 2 diabetes
mellitus. The general prevalence of diabetes mellitus\, and in particular
of feline and human type 2 diabetes\, has risen dramatically in recent ye
ars. This increase parallels the rise in obesity rates in the cat and huma
n population. Obesity and its ensuing metabolic consequences constitute ma
jor risk factors for human type 2 and for feline diabetes mellitus. I will
discuss the pathophysiology of feline diabetes mellitus and its shared fe
atures with human type 2 diabetes\, including pancreatic amyloid depositio
 n. Based on the disease’s pathophysiology\, this will include the discus
sion of treatment strategies that go beyond the current standard treatment
  with insulin.
