DESCRIPTION:A 10-15‰ secular trend in the d18O of marine sedimentary roc
ks (e.g.\, carbonate rocks\, cherts) over Earth history has been ascribed
to higher early surface temperatures or to a more 18O-depleted early ocean
. This longstanding debate has persisted due to the dual effect of tempera
ture and solution d18O on the oxygen isotope composition of marine precipi
tates. We constructed a new record of marine iron oxide d18O values\, whic
h suggests that the early ocean was 18O-depleted\, and that the early clim
 ate was cool.
