SUMMARY:Coral\, climate change and a conservation conundrum. - Paul Pearce

at the Zoological Society of London

DESCRIPTION:Despite concerted efforts to incorporate climate change impact
s\, formal threat assessments\, such as Red Listing\, still struggle to su
fficiently incorporate global warming and ocean acidification impact consi
derations. The resultant disconnect between threat reality\, evaluation\,
and conservation policy is exemplified by the current system-level threat
facing coral reefs and their reliant biodiversity. This talk will focus on
the coral viability crisis and suggest how we might improve the threat ev
aluation process to help optimise mitigation and adaptation policy. If we
can get it right for corals the outlook for all live on Earth may yet be t
 ransformed.
