DESCRIPTION:Abstract: It has been said that nothing in biology makes sense
except in the light of evolution. Evolution shapes the biology of organi
sms not only on the geological scale\, through the emergence and extinctio
n of species but also on timescales of months\, weeks and days. I describ
e how mathematics can be used to describe evolutionary processes\, and how
the application of mathematical methods to genome sequence data can lead
to novel approaches to clinical practice.
