DESCRIPTION:Language is constantly changing\, and at any given time there
is variation within and between groups. Social media has opened up excitin
g opportunities to study language variation and change at scale. First\,
I will present a study on measuring semantic change in Twitter using word
embeddings on a corpus spanning 5.5 years. Second\, I will present a study
on measuring geographical language variation based on Reproducing Kernel
Hilbert space (RKHS) representations. In both studies the lack of ground t
ruth poses evaluation challenges. I will discuss results on both synthetic
  and empirical data.\n
