DESCRIPTION:How do we refer and how do we resolve reference in a second la
nguage (L2)? \nWhy do some second language learners show persistent varia
bility in L2 \narticle production? And how do they process L2 articles in
comprehension? \nThese issues have been explored in a number of recent p
rojects utilising a \nrange of methodologies\, from picture descriptions
to eye-tracking in the \nvisual world paradigm. Populations involved in t
he experiments included L1 \nChinese\, L1 Thai and L1 French speakers of
L2 English\, as well as \nmonolingual English speakers. The talk will hig
hlight the most important \nfindings\, suggesting differences in which na
tive and non-native speakers of \nEnglish represent and process English a
 rticles.
