DESCRIPTION:Structural design is often considered in isolation during unde
 rgraduate\ndegree programmes.  The talk will emphasise the importance of p
 lacing\ndesign in the wider context of other building design disciplines\,
  and in\nthe context of the whole life cycle of constructed facilities.  I
 T tools\nwill be presented for supporting design\, including a tool develo
 ped during\nan undergraduate project at Cambridge for pre-stressed concret
 e bridge\ndesign\, and a tool for design reuse developed during PhD resear
 ch at\nStanford University.  The talk will conclude by describing current 
 and\nfuture research on the  national importance of design and design educ
 ation.\n\n
