DESCRIPTION:In the ancient world individuals often approached the gods for
\nassistance and advice in cases of illness\, which might itself be\nexpla
ined by the actions of deities or demons. Egypt in the third to\nfirst cen
turies BC was ruled by the Greek-Macedonian successors of\nAlexander the G
 reat\, the Ptolemaic dynasty\, while Greek-speakers\ndominated the upper l
evels of the administration and settled within\nEgypt in large numbers. Th
is paper explores the ways in which\nindividuals of different ethnic\, cul
tural and linguistic backgrounds\nsought healing from the gods. In particu
lar it examines healing at\nseveral major temples\, and investigates the a
dvice\, oracles\, dreams\,\nand cures often thought to have been provided
 at such sites.\n
