DESCRIPTION:Two processes are fundamental to the development of most anima
l embryos: gastrulation (forming the the basic layers of the body from an
undifferentiated mass of cells) and gradual building the main body axis\,
fuelled by stem cell populations. I will present what we learnt in the chi
ck about the molecular interactions specifying cell identity\, the collect
ive cell movements in the embryo\, and the interplay between morphogenesis
and cell fate decisions. I will also discuss what modelling approaches ca
n be used to test whether the mechanisms already identified are enough to
explain whole embryo morphogenesis\, their robustness and evolvability.
