DESCRIPTION:Acoustics within mean flows are governed by the linearized Eul
 er equations\, which possess a singularity wherever the local mean flow ve
 locity is equal to the phase speed of the disturbance. Such locations are 
 termed critical layers\, and are usually ignored when estimating the sound
  field\, with their contribution assumed to be negligible.\nA thorough mat
 hematical analysis of the critical layer for a linear boundary layer over 
 an acoustic lining has been given by Brambley. We present the investigatio
 ns of this problem with the same mathematical arguments for a much less ar
 tificial quadratic boundary layer profile.
