DESCRIPTION:There is increasing public health concern regarding viral hemo
rrhagic fevers (VHFs)\, a diverse group of animal and human illnesses asso
ciated with fever and haemorrhage. Using tools developed by our group\, I
will demonstrate how high-throughput sequencing can generate insights into
the the timing and origin of cross-species jumps and the transmission of
VHFs within populations. I will consider examples of Zaire Ebolavirus in W
est Africa\, Lassa fever in Nigeria\, and fevers of unknown origin in Ghan
a\, as well as the dynamics of two novel\, co-circulating simian haemorrha
gic fever viruses in naturally infected red colobus monkeys in Uganda\, an
d the challenges that viral diversity creates in developing vaccines.
