DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, I will describe my work on interactions between
stratospheric ozone and climate change. I will discuss a ‘Eurasia-North
America dipole’ (ENAD) mode in the total column ozone (TCO) over the No
rthern Hemisphere in winter\, which shows negative and positive TCO anomal
y centres over Eurasia and North America\, respectively. The positive tren
d of this mode explains an enhanced TCO decline over the Eurasian continen
t in the past three decades. It is closely related to the Arctic stratosph
eric polar vortex shift towards Eurasia since 1980\, which is partly cause
d by the Arctic sea ice loss. I will discuss how Arctic stratospheric ozon
e depletion could exert a feedback impact on the Arctic sea ice loss throu
gh changing atmospheric radiative and dynamical processes.
